Nán xìng (Sweet Apricot Kernel; 南杏) is commonly used in traditional cough remedies. It moistens the lungs to stop coughing and is especially beneficial for Lung-Yin deficient or dry coughs. These can manifest physically as dry and/or transient continuous coughing, dry itchy throat, and cough with no phlegm or little sticky phlegm.
Unlike běi xìng (Bitter Apricot Kernel; 北杏), it does not contain amygdalin and is therefore non-toxic. Nan Xing also makes a great ingredient in everyday soups and desserts. It is rich in Vitamin E and dietary fiber, which help nourish the skin and improve digestive function.
