Nán xìng (Sweet Apricot Kernel; 南杏) is commonly used in traditional cough remedies. It moistens the lungs to stop coughing and is especially beneficial for Lung-Yin deficient or dry coughs. These can manifest physically as dry and/or transient continuous coughing, dry itchy throat, and cough with no phlegm or little sticky phlegm.

Unlike běi xìng (Bitter Apricot Kernel; 北杏), it does not contain amygdalin and is therefore non-toxic. Nan Xing also makes a great ingredient in everyday soups and desserts. It is rich in Vitamin E and dietary fiber, which help nourish the skin and improve digestive function. 

Dosage:
6g to 9g

How to moisten the lungs and reduce phlegm:
Soak 1 piece of snow fungus in water for an hour, or overnight if you prefer a softer texture. After soaking, remove the hard stem ends and tear the snow fungus into smaller pieces. Remove the seeds and cut one whole snow pear into smaller pieces. Add the snow fungus (白木耳 / 银耳), Chinese snow pear (雪梨), 6g nán xìng (南杏), 6g běi xìng (北杏), 2 dried figs (无花果), and water into a double boiler. Ensure the ingredients are fully submerged in water. Double boil for an hour before serving.
