In TCM, excess phlegm and dampness in the spleen are one of the common causes of vertigo or dizziness. Dampness occurs in the body when the spleen is unable to optimally transform and transport body fluids. Improper diet (e.g. indulgence in cold and raw foods, fatty meats, deep-fried foods, etc.), poor eating habits, stress, worry, and overworking, can harm our spleen and stomach. When dampness is caused by impaired digestion, it can transform into phlegm in the lungs, which can prevent Qi (energy) from flowing to the brain, leading to dizziness or vertigo syndrome.
