Shú dì huáng (熟地黄) is the processed form of Rehmannia root. It is commonly used as a blood tonic and in treating women's health issues. It can nourish Yin and blood, replenish kidney essence and fortify marrow.
Benefits:
● Alleviates blood deficiency symptoms (e.g. anaemia, dizziness, palpitations, insomnia, irregular menstruation, abnormal bleeding between regular menstrual periods, continual light bleeding from the uterus, etc.)
● Treats liver-kidney Yin deficiency symptoms (e.g. soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, excessive or involuntary ejaculation of semen (spermatorrhea), night sweats, ringing in the ears, deafness, etc.)
● Prevents premature hair greying
Contraindications:
As this herb is rich and greasy in nature, it may hinder digestion and cause discomfort in the upper abdomen (dyspepsia). It is thus not recommended for individuals with deficiency of the spleen and stomach, Qi stagnation, excessive phlegm, gastric and abdominal fullness, anorexia, and loose stools. For long term use in large dosages, it can be combined with herbs such as dried tangerine peel (陈皮) or Shā rén (砂仁) to help regulate the movement of Qi and avoid dyspepsia.
