In TCM, sleep is closely linked to the balance of Yin and Yang, as well as the health of the Heart, Liver, Spleen and Kidneys. Good quality sleep restores energy, nourishes Yin and Blood, and helps the body repair and recharge. Poor sleep or insomnia often arises from imbalances such as Yin deficiency, excessive Liver fire, Qi stagnation, or a restless mind.
Factors that commonly affect sleep quality include:
● Stress, overthinking or emotional strain
● Irregular schedules, working late nights or shift work
● Excessive use of electronic devices before bedtime
● Poor diet, including late-night meals or excessive caffeine
● Weak constitution or underlying health imbalances
Some signs of poor sleep or sleep-related imbalance in TCM may include:
● Difficulty falling asleep
● Light, restless or dream-disturbed sleep
● Waking frequently during the night
● Feeling unrefreshed or fatigued upon waking
● Irritability, anxiety or a racing mind
● Night sweats or palpitations
● Tendency to feel “heaty” or restless at night
